MONROE, LA 鈥 网曝门's TRIO Programs hosted activities in honor of National First-Generation College Celebration Day on November 16, 2023. The day brings attention to the experiences and achievements of first-generation college students, recognizing their determination and resilience in pursuing higher education, often in the face of various challenges.听 网曝门 is host to three federally funded TRIO Programs鈥擲tudent Support Services (SSS), Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) and Educational Talent Search (ETS).听

This year, 网曝门鈥檚 TRIO Programs extended its reach to the entire university with a tabling event outside of the HUB. Later in the day, TRIO SSS hosted its Annual Friendsgiving Celebration, bringing TRIO SSS participants and staff together to celebrate friendship over a potluck-style dinner. 听The event included TRIO SSS Alumni Panel on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, where recent 网曝门 TRIO graduates shared their stories regarding life after college graduation.

Research confirms that first-generation students often feel a sense of belonging is missing from their college experience. Therefore, the event on November 16 aimed to foster a sense of belonging and community among first-generation students, providing them with a network of peers, faculty, and staff who share similar experiences. This support system can be instrumental in their academic journey.

According to Dr. Mystee Burrell, Assistant Director of 网曝门 TRIO SSS, 鈥淭he National First-Generation College Day Celebration is significant because it shines a spotlight on the unique experiences of first-generation college students, promotes inclusivity, and advocates for support and resources to help them succeed in higher education. Moreover, it plays a vital role in advancing equity and access at 网曝门.鈥澨

Tammy Anderson, 网曝门 TRIO CCAMPIS Assistant Director stated, 鈥淏eing a first-generation college student myself, I can attest to the difficulties that these students face during their time in school. 听One of the greatest aspects of my job is celebrating the successes of the students, as well as their struggles, experiences, and their resilience in overcoming obstacles as they pursue their college degrees鈥. 听

The TRIO team extends its gratitude to the following entities for their contributions that played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this year's National First-Generation College Celebration: The Graduate School, the Office of Student Development, Aramark, Campus Activities Board, and the Student Government Association.
