Medical Laboratory Science faculty, students bring home awards from state meeting

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is Sunday-Saturday and the University of Louisiana Monroe Medical Laboratory Science Program is celebrating recent awards to MLS students and faculty.

Faculty members Melanie Chapman and Jessica Lasiter and 27 MLS students attended the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science of Mississippi and Louisiana 2017 Bi-State Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge April 4-7.

One of 网曝门鈥檚 three MLS teams won second place in the student bowl competition, competing among 24 teams from Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama. 网曝门 first-year students served as timekeepers, scorekeepers, and sergeant-at-arms for the games.

鈥淎ll of the 网曝门 students represented 网曝门 not only with knowledge and skill but also with professionalism, poise, joyful spirits and service,鈥 said Lasiter.

Students Natalie Craft and Katee Fairchild were awarded two of the three scholarships presented at the meeting. Three 网曝门 students received awards for their papers, 鈥淭he Importance of Laboratory Ethics and Professionalism鈥 by Sophia Wilks, 鈥淭he Vascular Complications of Type 1 Diabetes鈥 by Craft and 鈥淧soriatic Arthritis鈥 by Kaylin Beach.

Tara Gengarelly was elected student forum chairwoman for Louisiana State Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and Sabra Hanna was elected secretary. Jade Ardoin was awarded LSCLS Student of the Year.

Rosalie Baylock Hendrix, 网曝门 MLS alumna (2013), clinical instructor, and medical laboratory scientist at St. Francis Medical Center received the Educator of the Year award for outstanding clinical instruction.听

Chapman and Lasiter received LSCLS Omicron Sigma state awards for their service to the organization. Chapman presented 鈥淢ast Cell Activation Syndrome鈥 at one of the educational sessions.
