Drs. Dorothy Schween and Amy Dagley will discuss Common Core and what it means for parents and students. Schween is director of the School of Education. Dagley is an assistant professor of education at . Together, they will provide an overview of Common Core, what it is, and what it isn't.

Common Core is a set of national educational standards for math and science at the elementary and secondary school levels. While the program has been controversial, Schween said that the goal of this discussion is information and accuracy.

"Our role is not to stray into the legal fight over Common Core, but to help the public differentiate between Common Core and PARCC," said Schween. "We'll be presenting the educator's perspective on Common Core."

Tuesday night's “Policy and a Pint” continues KEDM's successful community outreach program, which began more than two years ago with a discussion about tree removal along the Ouachita River Levee.

Other “Policy and a Pint” forum topics have included recycling efforts in northeastern Louisiana, a proposal for a new arena, and school safety in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting. KEDM development director Lila Strode said these kinds of discussions are important.

"It's an effort to get the community talking about how we can effect positive change," Strode said.

director of university broadcasting Jay Curtis said he hopes the “Policy and a Pint” forums are an agent of that positive change, but that they also spur people into thinking about complex issues. So far, according to Curtis, it seems to be working.
