The Hawkeye鈥攖he student newspaper at the University of Louisiana at Monroe鈥攔ecently
brought home awards from two journalism competitions, including a top-10 finish nationally.
At the Associated Collegiate Press鈥� annual convention in San Diego, Calif. the Hawkeye
won 10th place in the 鈥淏est of Show鈥� category for four-year weekly newspapers. The
convention hosted 143 schools.
鈥淢ost college students wouldn't give up weekends to create a paper each and every
week,鈥� said Jamie Arrington, the editor and chief of the Hawkeye.
鈥淲e do it because it is what we enjoy doing. Earning these awards and being able to
bring them back to share with our university is icing on the cake. We are proud of
the many accomplishments we've achieved.鈥澨�
Four 网曝门 students also won awards for writing and design in the 2013 Southeastern
Journalism Convention鈥檚 (SEJC) 鈥淏est of the South鈥� competition held in late February.
Garrett Boyte, of Oak Grove, won fifth place for 鈥淏est Opinion-Editorial鈥� writer.
Jaclyn Jones, of New Orleans, won sixth place for 鈥淏est News Writer.鈥�
Michelle McDaniel, of Winnsboro, won 10th place for 鈥淏est Newspaper Page Layout and
Design,鈥� and Adam Hunsucker of Bristol, Tenn., won ninth place for 鈥淏est Sports Writer.鈥�
The awards, chosen from 440 entries from 35 universities, were announced at the SEJC鈥檚
annual convention, hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Overall, 169 students from 34 universities were ranked in the 30 鈥淏est of the South鈥�
categories. The SEJC consists of 51 member universities in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Georgia, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
