pharmacy professor invited to India to present breast cancer research

Renowned cancer researcher and Pfizer endowed professor of pharmacology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe Paul Sylvester will present his findings at three upcoming medical symposiums in India.

Sylvester, Ph.D., the director of graduate studies and research in the college of pharmacy, will present "Latest Findings: Research and Role of Tocotrienols in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases,” Nov. 24 in Mumbai and Nov. 25 in Chennai.

In January, he will travel to Annamalai University, located in Tamil Nadu, where he will present “Tocotrienols: a rare form of vitamin E that displays potent anticancer activity” at the International conference on Phytochemicals in Health and Disease.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently awarded Sylvester and his colleagues from ’s College of Pharmacy another patent for potentially life-saving anticancer research.

Sylvester, who collaborated with pharmacy professors Khalid El Sayed, Ph.D., Amal Khalil Kaddoumi, Ph.D., and Sami Nazzal, Ph.D., said the compounds and methods in the patent have the potential to save and/or prolong lives through anticancer treatments.

The prospective uses of these newly discovered anticancer agents are significant within the field of cancer research, he said.

“The patent is for new and potent anticancer agents that were developed by creating carbamate ester analogues of natural tocotrienols—a natural, but rare form of vitamin E,” said Sylvester. “Specifically, these compounds show significant potential for use in the treatment of breast cancer.”
