ÍøÆØÃÅ celebrates MLK Day

The University of Louisiana at Monroe is participating in a Day of Service, Monday, Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Day.

Day of Service is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that strengthens communities through service.

Established by Congress in 1994, this day is one of the only two federally-legislated national days of service.

People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to gather and improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the "beloved community" that Dr. King envisioned.

This year, there are projects in all 50 states and the key focus is economic opportunity. ÍøÆØÃÅ is participating as a member of the Campus Compact's Southwest Region.

ÍøÆØÃÅ's Diversity Committee has invited ÍøÆØÃÅ students, student organizations, faculty and staff to participate in this endeavor by donating exercise equipment such as jump ropes, frisbees, soccer balls, and hula hoops, as well as healthy snacks.

The collected items will be given to Minnie Ruffin Elementary School. The goal is to collect enough of these items to provide equipment and snacks to 24 individual classrooms, a student population of 250 to 300 students.

This project has garnered support and collaboration from Delta Community College, several ÍøÆØÃÅ student organizations such as Lambda Rho chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Association of Students in Kinesiology, Sigma Delta Pi, NAACP, College Democrats and the Student Social Work Association. Community Support is exemplified by the Louisiana Cattleman's Association.

This support exemplifies ÍøÆØÃÅ's mission — valuing the continued development of mutually beneficial partnerships involving schools, government, businesses, and a variety of community-based agencies.

Persons who wish to donate items should do so by 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 13. The items should be delivered to Stubbs 123. Volunteers will be needed by 10 a.m., Jan. 16, to package the collected items for distribution later that week.
