Mobile App soars to top of searchable downloads after June 10 unveiling

The new Mobile App was unveiled just a few days ago, but a look at search results in the Apple iPhone App Store demonstrates the app’s growing popularity.

For example, looking for broad terms such as “Louisiana” in the app store’s search feature, officials noted that the Mobile App jumped from a 14th place ranking a week ago all the way to first place by the Monday morning following the app’s official unveiling on June 10.

Even when combining related key terms such as “university” and “Louisiana,” maintained its first place position.

“Recognizing that these numbers can and do fluctuate, it is still a strong indicator that the university has filled a very specific communication and technological niche,” said President Nick J. Bruno.

“We know the app will continue to be an indispensible tool for ‘Discovering ,’ not only for our students, but for the many supporters and alumni who want to keep up with the university using the convenience of their smart phone.”

Anecdotal statements posted on the wall of 's Facebook page supports Bruno's confidence in the popularity of the new app.

One student posted, “This app rocks!” and another said, “Best thing ever.”

But Sharonda Collins – who posted she didn’t have to be at a computer to check in – may have hit on one of the primary reasons the app has taken off in such a short time.

“What makes the app so unique is its portability,” said Bruno.

“Our students can now access much of the same information they currently access from their desktop or laptop computers, from course listings to individual degree plans. As is the case with any social media tool, our students spoke, and listened.”

The free app, developed in response to a recent survey showing 78 percent of students use a smart phone device, is among the latest “Discover ” initiatives, which embodies the university’s commitment to keeping constituents informed of all its accomplishments and activities.
