ÍøÆØÃÅ students express desire for building new recreational facility in Bayou Park

In an online straw poll, the largest percentage of voting ÍøÆØÃÅ students expressed their desires for a recreational facility with a new indoor/outdoor aquatic facility, amphitheater, and canoe dock in Bayou Park.

The straw poll, which concluded Thursday night, indicated that 45.62 percent preferred the development of Bayou Park; 27.76 percent voted to do nothing; and 26.61 voted to renovate the Lake C. Oxford Natatorium.

Students were also asked if they would like to see the natatorium converted into a multi-purpose venue, should the facility not be renovated into an aquatic facility. The largest percentage of students — 57.38 percent — voted yes, while 42.62 percent voted no.

A total of 1,214 ÍøÆØÃÅ students participated in the straw poll. The Student Government Association will take into consideration the opinions of the student body as the referendum process begins.

The students will vote on a referendum to fund the project at the end of the spring semester. No plans can be finalized until a referendum is passed.

The results of the recent straw poll are not binding, but instead simply indicate the preference of the students.

A formal decision regarding the funding of the new development will be made during the referendum.

SGA and administration will continue to work with community members throughout this process, as they have since the initial discussions began.
