Week of Welcome greets students Aug. 19-26

Students arriving at the University of Louisiana at Monroe are in for a fun-filled first week.

Week of Welcome, held Aug. 19-26, is a great time for students to get to know their university, make new friends, and participate in the spirit of all things ÍøÆØÃÅ!

WOW 2011, "Be you, Be unique, Be ÍøÆØÃÅ," could be the university's best offering to date.

With a near record number of incoming students, ÍøÆØÃÅ is poised to make a statement with this year's events.

Incoming freshmen are encouraged to participate in as many events as possible in order to better acclimate themselves with the ÍøÆØÃÅ community.

Students will have a variety of events to attend including move-in mania, ice cream and karaoke, spirit day, and the PREP reunion, which brings summer PREP groups back together.

Freshmen aren't the only students who benefit from WOW. Returning students also look forward to yearly activities.

"Week of welcome helps me get back into the swing of things," said Beth Affatato, a senior history major from Monroe.

"It's wonderful to see so many students and staff gearing up for another year at ÍøÆØÃÅ!"

WOW 2011 will also see some new events added to the schedule.

Yahzoo Amusements will provide the popular Zorb balls, which allow for a person to be placed inside and rolled down a 60-foot ramp.

Also making its debut will be Malone Stadium's new video board, which will show the WOW movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

This will be one the first public uses for the video board.

Nathan Hall, Assistant Dean for Student Life and Leadership, believes that WOW officially rings in the new semester.

"I can't imagine starting a semester without week of welcome," said Hall. "The experience is great not only for new students, but for returning students and staff."

WOW Volunteers will be on campus throughout the week to answer any questions students may have.

Volunteers will be wearing white and maroon "Got Questions?" buttons.
