senior Katherine Putnam all smiles as Miss America contest begins

University of Louisiana at Monroe senior Katherine Putnam, 23, met with Miss America pageant contestants from across the nation, as well as several members of the media, almost immediately upon arriving in Las Vegas on Thursday, Jan. 21.

On Friday, Jan. 22, the Venetian Resort hosted all Miss America contestants for a gondola ride, which Putnam said she thoroughly enjoyed. She and Miss Nebraska had their picture made with Robin Leach, famous for hosting “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” and who visited with the contestants during the gondola ride.

In spite of the hectic schedule, Putnam took time to send a message back to her family and other supporters.

“I’m having so much fun!” she said. “My bags finally arrived and I was able to unpack and rest. I had an IHOP pancake breakfast (with the press) and flipped pancakes. One landed on Miss Nevada’s crown! “
Putnam has been busily rehearsing the opening number and swimsuit routines, which all the contestants will perform in for the live televised show at 7 p.m., Jan. 30, on the TLC channel.

“Katherine asked that I share with you that she read her cards and notes last night before going to bed and they were very much appreciated,” said Dewana Little, executive director of the Miss Louisiana Organization.

“She said she went to bed knowing how many wonderful friends she has and how much love is coming her way. She wanted to be sure that everyone knows how much it meant to her,” said Little.

Upon arrival last Thursday evening, Putnam joined other contestant at an arrival ceremony and contestant orientation. Putnam reports that her roommate is Miss New Jersey and they are “having a great time together.”

Putnam taped her “Up Close & Personal Interview” on Friday, Jan. 22, which all contestants recorded to air as the televised show goes to commercial breaks throughout the live broadcast on Jan. 30.

“She said her interview went really well and was a lot of fun,” said Little.

Putnam’s preliminary competition schedule this week includes the formal interview session on Monday, talent competition on Tuesday, on-stage question on Wednesday and swimsuit and evening gown competition on Thursday.
