hosts Sonia Kovalevsky Day on April 23
The Department of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will host Sonia Kovalevsky Day 2010 on Friday, April 23. The event is aimed at high school girls and their teachers and encourages the girls to pursue majors in math or physics.
Drs. Christine Cumming-Strunk and Mariette Maroun, assistant professors of mathematics and physics, will introduce the students to mathematics beyond high school and how it affects their everyday lives. Events will include competitions, games, a guest speaker and a campus tour.
Erica Dean, the event’s guest speaker, has a mathematics degree and is now a customer support representative at Hawkes Learning Systems, a student-focused mathematics software company. She will speak about her experiences, how mathematics has influenced her life, and careers in mathematics in industry.
“We would like to thank Hawkes Learning Systems, Pearson Publishing and ’s Office of Recruitment and Admissions for supporting Sonia Kovalevsky Day 2010,” Cumming-Strunk said. “We appreciate their funding of our workshop for high school women students and their teachers in northeast Louisiana.”
