Wind Ensemble performs Nov. 6
The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Derle R. Long, will present a concert sponsored by the Division of Music and School of Visual and Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 in Brown Auditorium.
Admission is free.
The program includes “The Sinfonians March” by James Clifton Williams, “Jericho Rhapsody” by Morton Gould, “Nitro” by Monroe native Frank Ticheli, “On An American Spiritual” by David Holsinger, “The Witch and the Saint” by Steven Reinecke and “Washington Post March” by John Philip Sousa.
Guest conductors will include Dr. Michael Spears, former band director at West Monroe High School and Thomas Ruby, a current graduate student in music education at .
“Of particular interest on this program is the ‘Jericho Rhapsody,’” Long said. “The piece is a symphony of short movements based on a spiritual folksong depicting Joshua bringing down the walls of Jericho. In the middle of the piece the percussion section is called upon to recreate the tremendous noise of the walls coming down.”
“The concert will conclude with the ‘Washington Post March’ which was one of Sousa’s most popular works,” Long added.
