Department of Radiologic Technology active in state organization

University of Louisiana at Monroe Department of Radiologic Technology faculty members were elected to key posts and students earned several awards at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists in Lafayette.

Department Head and Assistant Professor of Radiologic Technology Brett Bennett served as the LSRT Recording Secretary and Membership Committee Chair during the past year.

He was elected to the office of 1st Vice President for 2009-10, and re-appointed Chair of the Membership Committee. Bennett also presented a lecture titled “Identifying some of the Common Causes of Increased Patient Dose in CR & DR Imaging.”

Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Radiologic Technology Andy Allen served the past year as Chair of the Louisiana Educators in Radiologic Sciences Council. He coordinated and moderated both the student and educator’s program at the annual meeting and was again elected Chair of the LERS Council, and also elected LRST Second Vice-President for 2009-10.

Both Bennett and Allen were recognized for their service and sworn in to their newly-elected positions at the Presidential Banquet by Linda Holden, past President and current Chairman of the Board of American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Jaclyn Peters, Instructor of Radiologic Technology presented a lecture titled “Domestic Violence: Signs & Symptoms Seen through Radiologic Evidence.”

All students enrolled in the professional program attended and actively participated in the conference, and Kennarius Giles, LSRT Student Advisory Council Chair, was recognized several times.

students swept the awards for the Student Essay competition. Madison Hillman earned a first-place award for her essay “How Radiology Saved My Life.” Darius Johnson earned a second-place award for “Radiation Protection with Focus on A.L.A.R.A.” and Carmen Costello was awarded Third Place for her essay “The Radiologist Assistant.”

In the Scientific Exhibit competition, students Sarah Bell, Jennifer Branch, and Wendy Donald earned a second-place award with their exhibit “To Pee or Not to Pee” – a creative title for the topic of bladder stones. The exhibit demonstrated aspects of the pathology and how it can be diagnosed through diagnostic X-ray procedures.

Chi Beta Gamma, the Radiologic Technology student organization, placed second in the T-Shirt Competition with “X-Ray, It’s Just Not That Easy.” The idea behind the design and phrase was based on the need for higher education and life-long learning in the profession, as well as the rigorous curriculum and clinical requirements for students in the professional program.

The 2009 Quiz Bowl team also represented the University well. Team members included Sarah Bell, Jessie Cole, Carmen Costello, Ashley Cumpton, Lana Herring, and Darius Johnson, and faculty member Andy Allen served as Team Coach.
