School of Nursing and College of Education introduce Project MAD

The School of Nursing and the College of Education introduced Project MAD (Making A Difference) to its community partners Nov. 12, as part of a University of Louisiana System Service Grant.

faculty members Bernadine Adams (nursing), Dorothy Schween (education), Danita Potter (nursing), Renee Miller (nursing), and Sherilynn Wiggins (nursing) are all intrinsically involved in the project.

The community partners consist of: Lincoln Elementary School, Carroll Junior High School, Carroll High School, John Breaux Assisted Living Facility, Mary Goss Nursing Home, Riverside Missionary Baptist Church, and City of Monroe/City officials.

The grant, funded by The University of Louisiana System from federal assistance money earmarked for recovery post-Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, focuses on service learning by higher education.

Potter, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, said, “Our goal is to expand it to provide service-learning activities that are academically based and create interdisciplinary partnerships with community organizations.”

The service-learning opportunities/experiences will improve the Booker T. Community of Monroe by way of partnership and collaboration by utilizing community personnel and resources, school administrators and teachers, students, university faculty and students to aid this and other specific communities with major risk factors for compromised quality of life.

The grants efforts will work to improve conditions for disadvantaged youth, help to reduce crime, provide better social services for the elderly, and support arts and culture, and assist with other problem-solving areas.
