ÍřĆŘĂĹ Counseling Center releases program list for fall 2007 and spring 2008
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Counseling Center offers a variety of opportunities to any ÍřĆŘĂĹ students, including short programs/discussions (usually one hour in length), theme-based activities, and support groups. If faculty and staff are interested in specific sessions, they will also have ones provided for them.
The fall 2007 lineup will begin Monday, Aug. 27 with one of the short programs/discussions, “Don’t Fence Me In,” a discussion of healthy and unhealthy boundaries.
Other scheduled short programs in the fall include:
- “Dancing with
Your Shadow” on Monday, Sept. 10. The session
will address when strong reactions are not about someone
else, but are really about us.
- “Meeting New People” on Thursday, Sept. 13 for those
learning how to establish a new social network.
- “Overcoming Test Anxiety” on Monday, Sept. 17.
- “Protecting Yourself” on Wednesday, Sept. 19 to help
attendees minimize the risk of experiencing a violent crime.
- “Time Management” on Thursday, Sept. 20 with the focus that
controlling one’s time can reduce stress.
- “Gambling—NOT a Harmless Extracurricular Activity” on
Thursday, Oct. 4, intended to educate about the warning
signs and consequences of compulsive gambling.
- “Understanding Your Learning Style” on Wednesday, Oct.
17 to help attendees maximize their learning potential.
- “Stress in the City” on Wednesday, Nov. 7 will teach
ways to manage contemporary stress, brought on by having too
much to do and not enough time.
The support groups offered in the fall will include:
“Personal Growth Group 1 on Thursdays, Aug. 30; Sept. 6, 13, 20, and 27; and Oct. 4.
“Grief and Loss Group” on Wednesdays, Sept. 12, 19, and 26; and Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31.
Activities for 2007 include:
“National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week” will occur from Oct. 21 – 27
Scheduled short programs in spring 2008 include:
- “I Inherited
What?” on Monday, Jan. 28. This session will
help with understanding what is “inherited” from families
using a genogram.
- “The Buck Stops Here” on Monday, Feb. 11 to help
participants break unhealthy family patterns.
- “Energy Drinks: Helpful or Harmful” on Monday, Feb.
18.
“College Men’s Health” on Tuesday, Feb. 19 with a look at how guys’ behavior impacts their health.
- “Striving for Perfection” on Thursday, Feb. 21. The
session will help attendees gain a deeper understanding of the dangers
associated with perfectionism.
- “Dating Violence” on Thursday, March 6. Participants
will be given warning signs of potentially violent relationships.
- “Sexual Harassment on Campus” on Wednesday, March 12,
intended to educate about the forms of sexual harassment and of
campus policies that protect the students.
- “Disability Awareness” on Thursday, April 3, examining
the question of who has a disability and what does it mean?
- “The Art of Changing” on Thursday, April 10 to teach
how to implement change successfully.
The support groups offered in the spring will include:
“Reducing Anxiety Group” on Wednesdays, Jan. 30; Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27; and March 5.
“Personal Growth Group 2” on Thursdays, Jan. 31; Feb. 7, 14, 21, and 28; and March 6.
Activities for 2008 include:
“National Alcohol Screening Day” will occur on Thursday, April 10. Interested participants should call to schedule a screening.

Regular counseling services are also provided. Appointments are encouraged, as counselors might be otherwise assisting clients, but walk-ins are welcome and encouraged.
