Institute of Gerontology sponsoring professional training on “older driver awareness” Aug. 23
The Institute of Gerontology proudly invites the public to attend the Institute-sponsored DriveWell training for older adults, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 23 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Ouachita Council on Aging, located at 2407 Ferrand St. Lunch will be provided.
DriveWell is a comprehensive information program funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, intended for community leaders, transportation planners and aging professionals (individuals who interact with the elderly as part of their job, like doctors, police officers, social workers, nurses, and members of a community group). It is intended for those who address driving questions. The programs address the increasingly complex challenge of ensuring the safety of older adult drivers and promoting the continued mobility of individuals as they restrict or stop driving.
Led by speakers from the American Society on Aging Expert Bureau, the programs will help participants promote community conversations that can lead to increased driver safety and more transportation choices for adults ages 65 and older. Specific topics covered in the workshop include assessing the need for alternative forms of transportation, making transportation options responsive to the needs of older adults and encouraging older drivers to consider changing when and how they drive.
The trainings will teach participants how to host their own training sessions using DriveWell materials. Participants are encouraged to take this information back to their communities.
Participants are asked to share the information they receive with aging professionals in their communities. There is no charge for the training session; however, registration is required. To view a training session schedule or register for a session, visit the DriveWell Resource Center online at www.asaging.org/drivewell/, or call (318) 342-1432.
